HAND MADE HARDWARE - This unique American made product truly is hand made because it is fired & hammered-forged (no machine hammering) from raw steel stock by an individual blacksmith in the time-honored tradition of colonial American anvil-hammered black smithing.

HAND MADE SPECIFICATIONS - The forging process involves highly heated metal and hammers of various weights and styles to create the finished piece. Variation will occur and is considered a characteristic of each uniquely shaped piece. No two pieces will be alike. Listed specifications serve as general guidelines for the product.

Most items ship within 3-5 business days. However, due to the handmade nature of this item, a 2-3 week lead time may be required before shipment for larger orders. We will clearly communicate any lead time requirements upon order processing or you may contact us for availability and estimated ship date.

Linseed Oil vs. Beeswax Finish

A traditional finishing technique used during colonial times (and prior) was the use of melted beeswax as a protective coating. The metal piece was warmed up, often placed back into the forge for a moment, then dipped into a warm container of melted beeswax. The beeswax preserved the natural character of the metal and protected against minor scratches or corrosion. Even so much as softening the feel of the metal when touched.

Hammered Hinges applies a boiled linseed oil to all the pieces using the same warming and dipping technique. A thin layer of linseed oil penetrates the metal and helps provide protection against corrosion. A beeswax finish adds additional costs and is slightly less effective. The drying time of linseed oil must be taken into consideration when deciding to purchase and use Hammed Hinges hardware.

Please keep in mind that the intention of Hammered Hinges is to reproduce the look and feel of antique hand made hardware. Corrosion is considered a characteristic result of these reproductions. Maintenance of these items can be a simple reapplication of linseed oil using a clean cloth.
