The need for a proper gate stop is made apparent when viewing this image above. The gate stop is an alignment device that can prevent hinge, latch and gate damage and will also help prolong the life of your gate. It also protects your warranty!
If a gate stop is not installed on your gate, the risk of damage to the gate and its hardware is increased and as a result, normal usage of the gate can result in fractured handles and hinges. Fractures can occur when a strong gust of wind or a heavy hand closes the gate without a gate stop. Don't forget about our four legged friends either.
Typical Installation

Suggested Location
Not all gates are built the same, however below illustrates the most effective placement of the gate stop. Installing a stop at the top or bottom of a gate will create a wobble when the gate is shut with any type of force. Installing the stop on the jamb, while it will work, isn't suggested; ask anyone that walks through the gate opening pushing a lawnmower.
